A summer coding camp should produce something. Ours is built backward from a single deadline: on the final Friday, every student demos a working app to the group and to their families.
Two weeks, live and online, in groups of six. Students arrive with an idea (or find one in the first session) and spend the camp turning it into software that runs.
Week one is fundamentals and a first small build, so nobody spends the camp stuck at a blank screen. Week two is the student's own project, with coaches moving between students as they hit real problems.
The demo deadline does a lot of work here. It forces scope decisions, which is the single most useful thing a young builder can learn: most beginner projects fail because they were too big, not because they were too hard.
Camp runs ages 10–17, but students aren't given identical tooling. Younger students work in Replit with Gemini on a parent-owned account. Students 13 and up can use GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT/Codex with parental consent.
We're explicit about this because the terms of service genuinely differ by age, and a camp that hands every child the same login isn't reading them.
It isn't a lecture series, and it isn't supervised free time. Students build for most of every session. Coaches teach in short bursts and then get out of the way, which is roughly how the work happens in a real engineering team.
